Edinburgh Research 29 Sep - 3 Oct 2011

Back to Edinburgh on an academic mission: a survey of retailers between South Bridge and Craigmillar Park. For better transparency I picked a short but representative section of Clerk Street, from Hope Park Terrace to the junction at East Preston Street. The shops were photographed and articles from the local press were collated accordingly. Moreover, I managed to find new and exciting material at Blackwell’s to enhance my business English and management courses. The last two days in September broke all temperature records, Brighton taking the biscuit at 29.9C with Scotland trailing only slightly behind at atrocious 27C. October saw a more natural equilibrium restored with fog and a bit of drizzle. The photographs below show Musselburgh beach on Sep 30 and Carlton Hill shrouded in mist on Oct 2. The new camera is doing a great job!

Christy Moore with Declan Sinnott live at Vicar Street/Dublin on Jan 5, 2010

Christy and Declan played their first gig of the year at sold-out Vicar Street, delivering 2 hours of ballads and a few wintry songs, starting it off with the "January Man".

IAN RANKIN

All photographs taken by Sylvia & Robert Hrdina

Robert and Sylvia Hrdina met Scottish bestselling author Ian Rankin at Waterstone's of Princes Street West/Edinburgh on Thu, Oct 15, 2009. Here is some of his wisdom: "Novels have got to be realistic [...]  novelists are voyeurs, anyway, stealing people's souls" and "nothing is ever wasted to the author - you never throw anything away!" Ian spared us a few precious moments and it was a most memorable evening. He even managed to excavate some of the German he had learned at Beath High, and he also claimed I sounded "almost Celtic, now that you're here". Warm praise from a living legend. Good for a toast at the Ox(ford Bar).
